The Program Manager will take the leading role in consolidating and expanding Educasias operations in Myanmar and, to a lesser extent, in other parts of Asia. They will be responsible for a team of four administrative and technical staff and a varying number of volunteers and consultants, operating from a small office in downtown Yangon. They will report to Educasias head office in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
The Program Manager is also expected to EITHER play a key role in the development of teaching materials OR establish and coordinate a systematic teacher training program throughout Myanmar.
Key duties and responsibilities
Manage and report on a multi-donor budget in conjunction with senior and administrative staff.
Supervise and support a team of four administrative and technical staff.
Develop and maintain relationships with partner organizations throughout Myanmar and in other Asian countries.
Represent Educasia at local, national and international events.
Participate in the strategic development of Educasia.
In addition, the job will involve ONE of the following roles
Teacher Trainer
Establish and coordinate a teacher training and support program throughout Myanmar.
Assess the training needs of target beneficiaries.
Develop and implement pre-service and in-service training programs to meet the needs of target beneficiaries; subjects will include general teaching skills, English language and various social science and community development subjects.
Monitor and evaluate the impact of training programs.
Support and/or supervise volunteer and consultant teacher trainers.
Write detailed reports of training workshops.
Curriculum Developer
Develop and edit curricula and teaching materials, particularly for social science, community development and English language learning.
Assess the curriculum and materials needs of target beneficiaries, and advise on appropriate resources.
Evaluate materials and curricula developed by Educasia or used by partner schools and organisations.
Support and/or supervise volunteer and consultant materials writers.
Become proficient in Adobe InDesign and lay out materials.
Required Experience and Attributes
Minimum two years of experience teaching and/or teacher training in a development context.
Native or native-like English language proficiency.
Experience of working with people with low proficiency in English.
A deep interest in education and development issues.
A willingness to travel throughout Burma and to regular meetings in Thailand.
Strong computer skills, including Microsoft Word and Excel.
Ability to rapidly learn new skills, especially computer programs.
Very reliable, punctual and well-organised.
Strong logical and numerical reasoning skills.
Excellent attention to detail.
Self-motivated and able to work efficiently without direct supervision.
Able to work as an effective member of a team.
Flexible and able to respond to rapidly changing situations.
Willing to work outside normal office hours when required.
Desired Experience and Attributes
Previous staff and financial management experience.
A degree in a relevant field.
A teaching or teacher training qualification.
Familiarity with current issues facing Burma.
Networks among relevant organisations and individuals.
Experience of designing context-appropriate curricula for low-resource environments.
Specialist IT skills, such as website design, computer-based graphic design/illustration, database development, multimedia resource development.
Other relevant expertise, such as illustration, proofreading, science or mathematics education, translation, fundraising.
Proficiency in Myanmar language.
Salary and Benefits
1,000,000 Myanmar kyat per month. This is enough to live comfortably in Myanmar and Thailand.
Visa expenses for Myanmar and Thailand.
Work-related travel and accommodation expenses.
20 days vacation per year.
