Chief Development Officer (CDO) will be a key player in advancing our ambition to be the leading voice and advocate for democracy and freedom. Our new CEO and the Freedom House Board of Directors and senior leadership are enthusiastic to partner with a successful development and marketing professional to lead these critical areas.

In partnership with the President, Mike Abramowitz, the Chief Development Officer will set strategy and lead implementation for Freedom Houseís overall development efforts globally. With a strong emphasis on developing Freedom Houseís major donor platform and engagement, the Chief Development Officer will have the opportunity to build an effective model for individual giving and will expand the successful corporate, government, and foundation partnerships already established. As the organization further strengthens its brand, communications will be an important driver for growth and the Chief Development Officer will lead the creation and dissemination of compelling marketing and event initiatives to support achievement of development goals.

As an external representative for Freedom House, the Chief Development Officer will be a tireless advocate for the organizationís mission. Working closely with the President & CEO and Board members, the CDO will act as an ambassador with donors and prospects to engage and solicit new supporters of Freedom Houseís mission. As such, this position will collaborate closely with senior leaders within Freedom House and with leading external funders and stakeholders.

Based in Washington, D.C., the CDO will join a Freedom House leadership team that is deeply mission-driven with a culture that is built on strong internal relationships and a collaborative work ethic. As a member of the Senior Leadership Team, the CDO will be excited to work in a dynamic and energetic environment that enables regular interaction with partners, funders, and advocates worldwide.

The CDO will lead Freedom Houseís Development team, which includes two full-time professionals, and will partner closely with the senior staff and the Board, as well as a network and communications professionals already on the Freedom House team.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Actively work with the CEO, a committed Board of Directors, and senior staff to develop and implement a comprehensive development strategy and annual plan to include corporate, foundation, government, and individual donors;
Collaborate with the CEO, Board of Trustees and senior staff to develop and implement a marketing and events plan to support the fundraising efforts, including marketing materials, website, email, social media, newsletters and dinners and parlor meetings;
Provide expertise and lead team in fundraising operations, including grant writing, research on individual and corporate prospects, production of marketing materials, development and implementation of fundraising initiatives and campaigns, management of donor records, and analysis of income flows;
Lead, motivate, and supervise a team of employees in achieving the organizationís fundraising and marketing goals;
Develop and manage overall development budget in partnership with the CFO.

Skills and Experiences

Senior experience (seven or more years) in nonprofit development and communications;
Proven track record of achieving annual revenue goals with focus on building and maintaining a successful individual giving platform, with additional experience in corporate, government, and foundation partnerships;
Exceptional communications skills; Ability to articulate Freedom Houseís mission, with proven ability to write and speak effectively and persuasively;
Demonstrated capacity and experience in setting an overall marketing plan to support development efforts, including planning, writing, editing, producing emails and online content, reports and marketing materials and holding events;
Experience with national funders and/or fundraising for a national organization preferred;
Bachelorís Degree required; advanced degree preferred.
